Tottenham expert can’t believe official’s claim as Spurs controversy re-analysed
Mike Dean has “opened a can of worms” following his comments about a decision in the Chelsea v Tottenham match last season.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Spurs and Aston Villa defender Alan Hutton said fans can no longer trust the decisions made by the onfield and VAR officials.
As quoted by The Guardian (25 August), the former referee told Simon Jordan’s podcast that he failed to correct a mistake in the Spurs v Chelsea game last year when he was in the VAR room.

Dean admitted to not want to give his friend, and onfield referee for the game, Anthony Taylor any more “grief” than he had already received in the game.
The Blues had wanted Cristian Romero sent off for a hair pull on Marc Cucurella in the 2-2 draw and Dean acknowledged it was “a really bad call” not advising Taylor to look at the screen.
Hutton was surprised Mike Dean admitted to the slip up.
“First and foremost fair play to him for being honest but I think it opens up a can of worms,” he told Football Insider.

“How can we now sit here and think people have made the right decision? People are going to think that way about everything now moving forward.
“He probably should not have said anything. It has opened up a can of worms and it is probably going to grumble on for a long period of time, people questioning decisions down the line and ones that have just occurred.
