Tottenham expert names Rodrigo Bentancur return date after medical update

Rodrigo Bentancur will return sooner than expected for Tottenham after suffering an injury at the World Cup.

That is according to Tottenham expert John Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels.

Bentancur, 25, was forced off with an injury after just 34 minutes of Uruguay’s 2-0 win over Ghana at the World Cup last week as they crashed out of the tournament.

Football.London reported on Tuesday (6 December) that he has torn his adductor and will be out for a number of weeks.

With the midfielder already suspended for Spurs’ first game back against Brentford on Boxing Day, Wenham is expecting him to return on New Year’s Day against Aston Villa.

“I don’t see him missing any games other than the one he is suspended for,” Wenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“It sounds like it will only be three or four weeks which is fantastic news. That means he will be fit for that New Year’s Day game against Aston Villa.

“Potentially a tricky game because we know Emery has had time to work with his squad and they might be a bit of an unknown quantity.

“So we will need our best players back for that one though I’m sure we won’t rush him if he isn’t ready. I don’t think he will miss much if any more football than he was going to anyway so that’s brilliant news.”

Bentancur started all six of Tottenham’s Champions League group games this season and only failed to start in one league match before the World Cup break.

He has scored four Spurs goals in 21 total outings this term.
