Tottenham expert shares ‘big’ Matt Doherty claim after Hotspur Way development

Matt Doherty could be in line to start when Tottenham face Brentford on Boxing Day,

That is according to Spurs expert John Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels.

Doherty, 30, has struggled for game time this season, only starting three Premier League games.

Despite criticism, Emerson Royal has been Antonio Conte’s right-back of choice in the Premier League and Champions League.

The wing-back started in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Motherwell on Friday (9 December) and scored twice in the 4-0 win.

Wenham claims Doherty may now be handed a rare start with Emerson Royal on the sidelines,.

“Matt Doherty has caught the eye in both games,” Wenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“Djed Spence has been given a chance to impress with Emerson Royal out injured but it looks like Doherty is impressing even more.

“It will be interesting to see who starts against Brentford because that will tell us a lot about each player’s role in the squad.

“Doherty was excellent at the end of last season before he picked up that injury away at Aston Villa. If he can find that kind of form then we will be onto a winner.

“Unfortunately, when he has played this season he hasn’t looked that player but he has done this before, look poor then turn it around.

“Hopefully he can take his big chance.”
