Tottenham expert shares next manager claim after confirmed development – ‘fans want to see it’

Alan Hutton has suggested Tottenham should change direction with their next manager appointment with years of “defensive and structured” football grating on the fanbase.

The former Spurs and Rangers defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, slammed the “baffling” appointment of Cristian Stellini.

Interim boss Stellini was sacked on Monday – with long-serving coach Ryan Mason promoted to the top job until the end of the season.

Tottenham’s last three managers – Jose Mourinho, Nuno Espirito Santo and Antonio Conte – have all employed a five-man defence with limited success.

The Lilywhites are unlikely to qualify for next season’s Champions League after falling six points behind the top four with a 6-1 away humiliation at Newcastle.

Former Bayern boss Julian Nagelsmann has been widely linked with the vacancies at Tottenham and Chelsea – but the Blues are set to finalise the appointment of Mauricio Pochettino.

Hutton told Football Insider’s Charlotte Cohen: “This is the thing with Tottenham, you never know what direction they will go in.

“After Pochettino, they went for Mourinho, Nuno and Conte.

“They are all such defensive and structured managers, and that doesn’t fit into the category that Spurs fans want to see.

“Where do they go now?

Tottenham

“This is the big thing for the fans, the style of football. It baffles me that Stellini was put in charge – he was playing the same style as Conte.

“The last three managers haven’t been the style that Spurs want. They’ve spent an absolute fortune on players like Ndombele and Porro, and I just don’t see any kind of direction.

“I genuinely can’t tell you where Spurs go from here.”
