Tottenham expert suggests the real reason for Matt Doherty omission after update

Alan Hutton “feels for” Matt Doherty at Tottenham due to his lack of game time.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs right-back said Doherty has “looked rusty” in recent games.

The 30-year-old has made just three appearances for Antonio Conte’s side so far this season.

As quoted by the Evening Standard (4 October), Conte said he is not seeing the defender “in the right way” to start games.

The Italian boss said he tries to put out the “best team”.

When asked what has been the problem for the right-back this season, Hutton told Football Insider: “Just a bad injury and a long layoff.

I do feel for him because he was having a difficult period of time, then he started playing well, and then he picked up the injury. Then it is difficult because you go back to square one.

I watched him when he came on for Ireland against Scotland and he looked rusty. He looked slow on his feet, but that comes with not playing a lot of football. I do understand where Conte is coming from.

For Doherty himself, he just needs to work hard. You can see that he has slimmed down, he is obviously putting the work in in training.

“It is about just getting game time now. But there is a lot of competition there so he is going to find it difficult and you have to impress somebody like Conte day in day out if you want to make the team.
