Report: Tottenham eye the new Thierry Henry, asking price is £20m-plus

By Harvey Byrne

Tottenham have been watching Monaco forward Kylian Mbappe, according to a report.

News site HITC has named Spurs alongside a number of top European clubs interested in the 17-year-old.

The teams include Arsenal, Manchester United, Atletico Madrid and Juventus and it is stated that it would take over £20million to obtain the France Under-19 international.

It is reported that the young starlet has also been likened to former Monaco forward stars Thierry Henry and Antony Martial, who both made big money moves to the Premier League.

Mbappe was an unused substitute when Tottenham met Monaco in France in the Champions League, while he wasn’t named in the 18-man squad which travelled to Wembley.

However, he has played in 11 fixtures for the French side this season, including three appearances in the Champions League.

He has a return of three goals and five assists and has broken two records set by Thierry Henry at Monaco.

The young star became the club’s youngest-ever debutant aged 16 years 347 days in 2015, while also becoming the team’s youngest goalscorer at the age of 17 years and 62 days.

Mbappe is still contracted until 2019, but it is stated in the report that Monaco will not be able to resist a sizeable offer.

Football Insider verdict:

£20million-plus is an incredible amount of money for a player aged just 17 years old. However, with young players buyers are paying for their potential to develop, rather than a wide sample top-level performance. It will be a risk for any club to take and Mbappe could become one of the world’s best strikers, or he could become Tottenham’s next John Bostock. However, manager Mauricio Pochettino does have a great record with young players from his time at Southampton and Spurs respectively. If Mbappe is to succeed under any manager then it will be under the Argentine. The striker will not be expected to make the first team straight away with star Harry Kane in the side, but he could be the perfect signing, providing quality depth, while not shouting about the lack of first team football. He could be the long-term replacement for the England international and Spurs must move quickly for the young starlet with the rival clubs interested in him.

In other Tottenham transfer news, PSG are planning a £50million bid for this Spurs star.
