‘Tottenham face problems’ after official request submitted – Stefan Borson

Tottenham have endured a challenging season following several disappointing performances throughout the campaign.

Spurs currently sit 13th in the Premier League table, having claimed victories in just 10 of their 27 matches this season.

Despite their unconvincing campaign, which has seen manager Ange Postecoglou facing sack threats, the north London giants have decided the most pressing matter to contend with is their name.

In an email sent to broadcasters, club chiefs made it clear they do not want to be referred to as “Tottenham“, instead preferring “Tottenham Hotspur” or just simply, “Spurs”.

Finance expert Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider they will face “problems” trying to enforce that request because Tottenham Hotspur is too long and other sports teams are called Spurs.

Jeff Stelling mocked Tottenham’s “stupid” message” as he insisted they should be focusing on how to win a trophy.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy and ownership group ENIC have faced fan criticism over the past few months after the club have now gone 17 years without securing any silverware.

First Division (1961)
FA Cup (1991)
League Cup (2008)
UEFA Cup (1984)

Tottenham are being ridiculed after marketing exercise

Borson believes the name request is a marketing exercise to reach an international audience.

He told Football Insider: “It’s a very simple branding exercise, where they’ve decided that’s how they want to be known.

“I think they’ve got problems because it’s very unlikely that you’re going to get people outside the club calling them Tottenham Hotspur.

“It’s just too much of a mouthful in discussion in the media. People will try, but it’s quite easy for them to slip into saying Tottenham, so good luck with that.

“Then the Spurs part of it, I think from an international audience perspective, we know that there are other major clubs called Spurs, so there’s a confusion element and a potential issue there.

“It’s pretty basic marketing that a club would want to be positioned in a certain way to an external audience. All of the clubs will have their own preferences in respect to that.

“Nottingham Forest do not like to be known as Notts Forest. Manchester City, I think sometimes don’t like to be known as Man City, and sometimes actually embrace it with the website themselves.

“Every club has their own way of wanting to be known, it’s just very hard when you’ve got a very long name to expect people in normal dialogue to be saying Tottenham Hotspur. It’s just too long.

“It’s not a big deal, but it’s a very basic marketing kind of exercise that excites marketing people and that everybody else kind of slightly ridicules.”

Tottenham are racing Crystal Palace to sign Tyler Dibling

Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider Crystal Palace are racing Tottenham to sign Tyler Dibling following his impressive performances this season.

Dibling is certain to leave Southampton if they are relegated at the end of this campaign.

The 19-year-old winger has hit four goals in 28 games after breaking into the first team at St Mary’s this season.
