Tottenham facing 'lots' of competition in race to sign Weston McKennie - pundit

Tottenham will face competition from teams in the Premier League and Europe for Weston McKennie.

That’s according to former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Spurs’ interest in McKennie.

According to Italian outlet Calciomercato (4 December), the Lilywhites are interested in the 24-year-old and could make a move to sign the Juventus midfielder.

The USA international was in the starting lineup for all of their World Cup matches in Qatar and helped secure them a place in the round of 16 where the were beaten by the Netherlands.

McKennie’s Juventus contract expires in 2025 but he faces tough competition with the likes of Paul Pogba, Adrien Rabiot and Manuel Locatelli for Massimiliano Allegri to choose from.

Whelan insisted Spurs have had the perfect opportunity to decide if McKennie is the right fit.

This is where the window is good because there is the World Cup,” he told Football Insider.

You find out a lot more about certain players within Europe, you get to see them playing week in week out for the national side up against the best players in the world.

He was another stand out. When you look at the American team it is very solid, very quick, very athletic. These are the sort of players Premier League teams will be looking at and he could do a job.

He had a great tournament. I think the USA turned a lot of heads. If any teams are out there in the Premier League and Europe will be looking at him.

I think he could offer something to the football club to bolster their squad and help them be successful. I think he has caught the eye of a lot of people.”
