'Panic', 'Would bother me more than Toby' - Tottenham fans go berserk after ace makes quit claim

By Richard Parks

Tottenham fans have taken to Twitter to express their anger and frustration after Mousa Dembele admitted that he could quit in the summer.

The Belgium international, 30, is out of contract in the summer of 2019 and has not opened talks with the club over a new one.

Dembele has confirmed to Belgian newspaper La Derniere Heure as quoted in The Telegraph that his future is on hold until after the World Cup due to an agreement he had with the club at the beginning of the season.

Dembele admitted: “At the beginning of the season, I said ‘I had physical problems, I want to see at the end of the season how I feel’. That’s what the club and I decided by mutual agreement.

“At this moment, I am very happy at Tottenham. I do not lie when I say that I do not think about a big transfer. I want to play a World Cup and afterwards we will see.

“For now, I’m only focussing on Tottenham. Maybe this is my last season. Or maybe I’ll sign a new deal. We’ll see.”

Dembele has been a key player in the team since joining from Fulham in the summer of 2012 and Mauricio Pochettino has hailed him as a “genius” and one of the best players he has ever worked with.

His age and injury record mean that contract negotiations could be complicated, but supporter are in no doubt about his significance and value to the team.

One hailed Dembele as “our most important player” and another stated his exit “would bother me more than Toby” Alderweireld leaving.
