Davinson Sanchez has been slated by Tottenham fans for some errors in recent matches.
The finger was pointed at the centre-back for questionable positioning and concentration in the Champions League defeat to Juventus and the first half of the 4-1 triumph at Bournemouth, when Spurs were severely under the cosh.
But the Tottenham faithful need to be patient with Sanchez and not call for him to be axed every time he makes a mistake. He is destined to be a world beater.
Sure, he Sanchez is not Toby Alderweireld, the Belgian centre-back who was badly missed against Juventus and whose future at the club is clearly up in the air.
But the Colombia international is in the spring of his career rather than the autumn, as is his 29-year-old fellow right-sided centre-back.
Tottenham supporters need to be patient with Sanchez who, working on a daily basis with Mauricio Pochettino and his coaching staff, will soon develop into a world-class operator.
It is a viewpoint offered by the manager during the south American’s debut season.
“There is a massive [scope] to improve potentially, it’s massive for him,” said Pochettino of Sanchez, as quoted by Football London. “In only a few months, he’s showing he’s doing fantastic job for us.
“He’s so clever, and he’s very humble, and he’s very open to learn. He’s a player when you tell something his reaction is to be open, and be critical with himself, and that is a massive skill from a player, when he’s so open to improve.
“The conditions he has are amazing to be one of the best centre-halves in the world. At 21-years-old he showed he is so brave. He takes risks but he is not reckless. I think he’s one of the best today but has potential to improve a lot more.”
With 35 appearances already under his belt this season for Sanchez and a key role in one of Europe’s most eyecatching teams, he has made great strides.
That will only continue as he gets more top-level experience and continues to learn from the mistakes he makes.
Spurs fans who criticise him must be realistic. And fair. The kid is good. He will eventually be great.
In other Tottenham news, it can be revealed that the club have ripped up the contract of a defender.
