'Please god no', 'Absolutely gutting' - Tottenham fans distraught after potentially huge blow v Real Madrid

By Russell Edge

Tottenham fans turned to social media to voice their worries after defender Toby Alderweireld limped off with an injury in their clash with Real Madrid on Wednesday.

The Belgian centre back was substituted by Mauricio Pochettino after going down clutching his hamstring in the 24th minute, and was caught on camera punching the ground showing he knew his game was over.

The Tottenham faithful were immediately concerned over his fitness and took to Twitter to demonstrate how distraught they were at what could potentially be a huge blow for the club.

Here, Football Insider has rounded up a selection of the supporters’ best tweets:

Alderweireld has been a crucial member of the Tottenham squad this season, having appeared in all but one of the club’s 16 fixtures across all competitions so far.

The only game he missed out on was the League Cup victory over Barnsley, and had played every minute of each of the 14 matches he appeared in prior to coming off against Los Blancos.

Since arriving from Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2015, the former Ajax man has made a total of 103 appearances for the north London club, scoring six times and chipping in with three assists.

He has also been a star man for his country as well, making 73 appearances for Belgium since his debut in 2009.
