'I think he's gone', 'Encourage Chelsea' - Tottenham fans react after Alderweireld sends message

By Harry Sykes

Mauricio Pochettino has passed on a message from Tottenham contract rebel Toby Alderweireld that he is “happy” and “fully committed with the club”.

Spurs boss Pochettino has explained that he spoken with the defender after his agent urged the club to sell the 28-year-old if they are not willing to reward him with the deal he deserves.

Pochettino reassured supporters about the position of Alderweireld when he addressed the media at his weekly media briefing, as quoted by ESPN FC correspondent Dan Kilpatrick.

“He was talking with me this morning and he’s so happy, he wants to make it clear he is fully committed with the club,” said the Argentinian manager.

Tottenham fans are fretting about the possibility of losing one of their star players even though the transfer window closed last week and he cannot move until the January re-opening at the earliest.

However, most appear to have been placated by the words of the manager today, although one suggested that Chelsea should be encouraged to sign Alderweireld only for the player to make a Ross Barkley-style last-minute U-turn.

Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:

The centre-back’s future has come under question even though he is under contract until 2020.

Stijn Francis, who advises Alderweireld along with his father Vic, claimed this week that Spurs should sell the Belgium international if they are not willing to give him the contract he warrants as he dropped the bombshell that eight of Europe’s leading clubs are keen to sign him.

Alderweireld is believed to want a huge upgrade on his current £50,000-a-week contact and it has been reported that Manchester City are lining up an imminent move for the defender as uncertainty over his future continues.

The Belgium international has been one of the Premier League’s outstanding defenders since joining Spurs from Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2014.

In other Tottenham transfer news, the club have been hit by a devastating blow as a key first-teamer has been sidelined until next year.
