Tottenham fans took to Twitter to hail Jan Vertonghen for his performance against Manchester City even though their team slumped to a 3-1 Premier League loss on Saturday night.

Goals from Gabriel Jesus, Ilkay Gundogan and Raheem Sterling did the damage in the defeat at Wembley, while Christian Eriksen continued his excellent form with another goal to pull the score back to 2-1 shortly before half-time.

The north London club remain seven points above fifth-placed Chelsea and are still strong favourites to secure a Champions League spot ahead of them.

They also have an FA Cup semi-final on the horizon and will face Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United in that tie.

Vertonghen, 30, played the full 90 minutes of the match and earned widespread praise for his performance against City’s multi-dimensional attacking players.

The 30-year-old is considered by many the club’s player of the season and he was once again their best defender as he made a number of blocks and interceptions to keep City at bay.

Spurs fans on social media drooled over the display of the 6ft 2in centre-back on social media, with one claiming he “still managed to play like a God” despite the scoreline.

Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:
