Andros Townsend scored the opening goal for Crystal Palace in their 3-0 win against Arsenal on Monday night – and Tottenham fans were delighted he had put their bitter rivals to the sword.

The Gunners’ defeat at Selhurst Park is not only a huge boost to Palace’s survival bid but also strengthened Spurs’ chance of finishing above Arsenal for the first time in the Arsene Wenger era.

Townsend broke the deadlock with a neat finish after 17 minutes from Wilfried Zaha’s cross and Yohan Cabaye doubled the home side’s advantage with superb finish.

Spurs academy product Townsend then won the penalty for the Palace third, which was converted by Luka Milivojevic.

Palace fans were not the only ones who were in ecstasy, with Spurs supporters equally delighted at Arsenal’s continued freefall.

Tottenham fans were particularly pleased that Townsend had managed to make such a big impression.

Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:

Townsend left boyhood club Spurs in January of last year when he transferred to Newcastle for £12million.

But the winger lasted just half-a-season at St James’ Park before joining Palace last summer for a similar fee.

The England international has had a mixed season at Palace, scoring three goals and supplying six assists from 34 appearances in all competitions.

In other Tottenham news, the club have terminated the contract of one of their defenders.
