Tottenham fans react on Twitter to Alderweireld omission v Southampton

By Harvey Byrne

Star centre-back Toby Alderweireld was not named in Tottenham’s 18-man squad to face Southampton on Wednesday, leaving Spurs fans on Twitter worried.

The 27-year-old missed the north London side’s last meeting against Burnley 10 days a go, but reports stated that he may return with Erik Lamela being the only injury casualty from the squad.

However, the key man was omitted once again from the line-up to face his former side for the St Mary’s Stadium clash.

Alderweireld has only recently returned from a seven-week injury suffered earlier in the campaign and now many Spurs fans are worried about their star man on social media.

Here are a selection of their messages on Twitter:

Alderweireld made the switch to White Hart Lane from La Liga outfit Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2015 after starring for Southampton in the Premier League.

He has continued to be a rock at the heart of the Spurs defence and has helped the side maintain one of the strongest defences in the Premier League.

Manager Mauricio Pochettino likes to play with right footed and left footed centre-backs, which sees the versatile Eric Dier line-up in the Tottenham back four against Southampton.
