Tottenham fans react on Twitter as defender settles terms with club

By Emma Sanders

Tottenham fans reacted with excitement on Twitter after the club announced they have secured a new long-term deal with defender Jan Vertonghen.

The centre-back has settled the terms of a new contract that will keep him at the club for three more years until 2019.

The news was revealed on the club’s official Twitter account on Friday afternoon ahead of Tottenham’s clash against Swansea in the Premier League on Saturday.

Vertonghen claimed it was a “privilege” to be part of the current squad and believes it is the “strongest squad” he has ever played in.

Spurs went 12 games unbeaten in the Premier League this season before suffering their first defeat against Chelsea last Saturday at Stamford Bridge.

They currently sit in fifth position, seven points off their London rivals at the top of the table but have had a number of major injury absentees already throughout the campaign.

Harry Kane was out of action for two months before returning in the derby against Arsenal and Vertonghen’s centre-back partner Toby Alderweireld has not featured since 15th October.

Vertonghen and his compatriot are considered one of the best defensive partnerships in the league and the 29-year-old has become a hugely valuable player since joining the club in 2012.

He has already made 131 league appearances for Tottenham and fans were delighted he has decided to stay at the club, just days after Kane also committed his future.
