‘Tottenham get big transfer boost as hurdle is cleared’ – Stefan Borson

Tottenham are set to have more flexibility in the upcoming summer transfer window after qualifying for the Champions League.

Spurs beat Manchester United 1-0 in the Europa League final after Brennan Johnson grabbed the only goal of the game in Bilbao on 21 May.

The victory has ended the north London giants’ 17-year wait for a trophy, dating back to their League Cup win over Chelsea in 2008.

Tottenham have banked around £38million in prize money from the Europa League this season, with their final success earning them a place in next season’s Champions League.

Finance expert Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider Spurs will now have more money to do deals this summer following their previous cash-flow issues.

Tottenham’s accounts for 2023-24 revealed their turnover fell from £549.6million in 2022-23 to £528.2million.

Man United hit by crushing blow after Tottenham twist

Borson insisted Tottenham will now have more available cash than Man United following their Europa League success.

He told Football Insider: “With Spurs and Manchester United, you’ve got the capturing of additional cash flow.

“Both teams appear to have issues. Forget PSR, revenue and profit from an accounting perspective.

“From an actual cash perspective, actually having the money to go and do the things that you need to do to pay for players and for transfers, both of the clubs seem to have an issue with cash at the moment and find it quite difficult to raise money from third-party sources.

“They have both got individual issues in respect to that, but both of them don’t seem to be able to raise any more debt.

“This will be good for Tottenham Hotspur because this will mean that they’ve got the cash.

“Obviously, it’s tricky if you’re United because they won’t have the cash that they would get from Europe.

“By cash I mean money coming through from prize money and also people literally paying through the gate for those games through direct debits, credit cards etc.

“That is cash that comes into the club that you can then spend and that you don’t need to wait for down the line. So, it’s good for Spurs and bad for Manchester United.”
