Tottenham handed ‘definite boost’ over West Ham by ruling body – Campbell

Kevin Campbell has claimed Tottenham have been “a definite boost” in the race for the top four after they were eliminated from the Europa Conference League.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Premier League striker said Uefa’s decision will help Antonio Conte’s side in their attempts to finish above Arsenal, West Ham and Man United.

As reported by Sky Sports (20 December), Spurs have been eliminated from the Europa Conference League after Uefa counted their postponed fixture against Rennes as a forfeit.

As quoted by Eurosport (21 December), Antonio Conte revealed Tottenham’s lawyers are considering an appeal against Uefa’s decision.

Campbell suggested the Lilywhites should scrap an appeal as the original decision “has played into their hands”.

“It will definitely give Tottenham a boost [not being in the ECL],” he told Football Insider.

“Now they can prepare a lot better for their league games, as opposed to playing on Thursdays.

“It is a tournament that Spurs probably recognise that they don’t need. I’m sure they did not want to be eliminated but it has played into their hands. That’s just the way it has shaken out.

“At the end of the day, whoever is going to get into the top four is going to be there on merit. There is a lot of games left so it’s all to play for.

“It will be a big achievement for whoever gets in there. It’s a tough one. As they say though, possession is nine-tenths of law.”

Tottenham

Tottenham are six points off fourth-placed Arsenal.

However, they have three games in hand on their north London rivals.
