Medical expert issues ‘huge’ Tottenham claim after official statement

Tottenham won’t be too bothered their Europa Conference League campaign is over and now have a “big opportunity” to focus on lucrative domestic competitions .

That is the view of injury expert Ben Dinnery, who runs the Premier Injuries site and has a background in medicine and data analysis.

A Covid outbreak in the Spurs camp prevented them from playing their final group stage match against Stade Rennais on 9 December.

Everton

The club announced yesterday (20 December) that Uefa have said the match cannot be played, meaning Spurs have been eliminated.

The knockout rounds could have added up to 10 matches to Spurs’ season, which is already behind schedule due to Covid-related postponements.

Dinnery suggests that the news from Uefa will therefore not come as s big blow and observers should not be fooled by Spurs’ apparent rage at the decision.

“Internally, they won’t be too disheartened by the decision,” he told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.

“They knew Uefa had these protocols in place and what the implications would be if they failed to comply. This decision won’t be a huge surprise.

“They could have involved players from the under-23s, even though they had an outbreak themselves.

“They carry a fairly large first-team squad and could have put something out there themselves.

“Spurs have only played 15 games in the league, whereas some have played 18.

“It’s a big opportunity to focus on the league or maybe the FA Cup. Hopefully, they can qualify for European competition.

“Football clubs want to follow the money, and that’s where the money is.”

Tottenham

Tottenham’s 2-2 draw with Liverpool last Sunday (19 December) was their first match in two weeks.

They face West Ham in the League Cup quarter-final tomorrow (22 December).
