Maguire: 'Absolutely critical' new Tottenham hire can lure wave of top young stars

Tottenham can attract London’s best young players if they fill their scouting positions with talented and experienced operators.

So says finance boffin Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider with Spurs reportedly set to confirm the appointment of Chris Perkins.

Football.london claimed on 21st July that Spurs are ready to name the Everton staffer as their new head of emerging talent.

Perkins has been with the Toffees for 15 months after spending five years with Derby County, as per his LinkedIn profile.

Domestic youth recruitment has taken on added significance in the post-Brexit sphere.

And Maguire explains that consistently finding the best young footballers is only possible with talented staff.

He told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams: “It’s absolutely critical, especially if you look at Spurs and the number of players who have come through the academy there.

“You’ve got a young, diverse city on your doorstep. So making sure you are ahead of the pack in terms of your attractiveness and being able to spot the difference between a good player and a very good one is crucial.

“You have Arsenal, Chelsea and others in direct competition with you. Clubs are now allocating individuals to particular counties to try and hoover up talent.

“So having somebody that is not only experienced from a scouting perspective but can also head up a team and find exactly what they are looking for in terms of culture and ethos is essential.”
