Tottenham have just pulled off ‘the hardest thing in football, believe me’
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has admitted redesigning a badge is one of the hardest things to do in football following Tottenham’s decision to revamp their crest.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes it makes sense to have a smaller logo as it reproduces better.
Tottenham announced on 18 November they have rebranded their badge following a ninth-month process.
The new crest is similar to the old badge, but the club’s name has been removed from underneath the iconic cockerel in a controversial move that has dismayed a big section of the Tottenham fanbase.
Spurs said the new badge will be seen throughout the stadium at their upcoming matches.
Tottenham decision makes sense after new badge revealed
Wyness believes the decision has likely been made from a graphic design perspective.
He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “I’ve been through logo redesigns and believe me, it’s the hardest thing in a football club.
“The fans are up in arms because it’s tradition, it’s history and it’s certain things that have changed and it often is done for no reason.
“The only thing I can say about the Spurs one, which is cleaning up the cockerel basically is all it’s doing.
“It makes sense to have as clean and as small a logo as possible. The less detail you have on a logo, the better it reproduces.
“It’s visually something as simple as that is what they’re trying to achieve I believe. A lot of the logos historically have been quite complex.
“The less lines in a logo you have, the better. It’s probably coming from a graphic design point of view.

“But nevertheless, I haven’t seen a big outpouring of complaint from the Spurs fans.
“Everybody seems reasonably happy because it’s still the essence of what the Spurs logo was.”
