If there is one Tottenham transfer story which looks set to stretch into the summer, it looks set to be their pursuit of Fulham starlet Ryan Sessegnon.
The 17-year-old has been catching the eyes of fans, pundits and scouts alike with his blistering performances for the Cottagers, and there can be little doubts that he seems destined for the biggest stage in English football sooner rather than later.
In fact, it seems almost certain that he will be plying his trade in the Premier League next season, with the Sun reporting that Spurs are joined by fellow English heavyweights Manchester United and Manchester City in chasing the part time left back, part time winger and full time speed machine.
Said to be rated at £30million, it seems a reasonable fee for a young talent who is already putting in impressive performances at the top of the second tier, and has been tipped for an England call up despite his age.
However, the Sun boldly claim that Sessegnon would be willing to refuse a move to any of the English giants in order to remain at Craven Cottage – if the London club manage to make their way into the Premier League come the end of the season.
Now, while this is admirable from the youngster, demonstrating loyalty to the club which has helped develop him into the player he is, the report has to be taken as smoke and mirrors, to throw prospective clubs off his scent and either ward off suitors, or drive up the price for his signature come the summer.
Is Sessegnon really going to turn down the prospect of moving to the Premier League champions elect with City, or to play at Old Trafford with United, if they come calling?
It is quite possibly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and the money, the fame and the potential could all be dashed if he suffers a poor year in the top flight with Fulham.
If it is his personal life he fears for, then Spurs have to be the frontrunners, for he need not move city were he to join the Lilywhites, plus his opportunities in the first team seem greater than at either Manchester club.
Any which way, if a big money bid comes in from an English giant, Sessegnon seems unlikely to turn it down, and Spurs have nothing to fear in their pursuit.
In other Tottenham news, one man has been the focus at Spurs ahead of the clash with Chelsea.
