Tottenham ‘hold talks with agent’ of star midfielder Postecoglou loves

Tottenham are looking to accelerate their deal to sign England midfielder Angel Gomes this summer, according to their former scout.

Mick Brown, who also worked as the chief scout at Man United and Blackburn, who remains very well-connected at his former clubs exclusively told Football Insider that talks have taken place with the 24-year-old’s agent.

Gomes’ contract with Ligue 1 outfit Lille is set to expire in June, with no new deal on the cards, and he is attracting interest from a number of Premier League sides.

Football Insider revealed on 11 March that West Ham have moved quickly for Gomes‘ signature as they look to steal a march on their rivals.

The midfielder has been available for pre-contract talks since January, but discussions over his future are expected to accelerate in the coming weeks.

Ange Postecoglou is understood to be an admirer of Gomes and has a clear plan for his role in the side, in another boost to Spurs’ chances.

Tottenham accelerate move to sign Angel Gomes

Football Insider revealed on 15 March that Postecoglou is a big fan of Gomes and is a driving force behind Spurs’ interest in the midfielder.

Brown, who has a wealth of experience in top-level player recruitment after over a decade at Man United during their most successful period, explained that Gomes would be a good fit for the way the squad is heading under Postecoglou.

The fact he’s available on a free is a big draw for any club,” he told Football Insider.

“If you look at this Tottenham team, there are areas they’re going to need to improve in the summer and one of those is the midfield.

“James Maddison is a ‘get it, pass it’ type of player – not quite the same as Angel Gomes but that type of technically sound midfield player.

“But he’s not always a starter for them and that might be an issue.

“I think Tottenham have got to decide whether they’re a technical footballing team or if they want to be physical and battle their way through games.

“At the moment, I think they’re leaning towards the former.

“In that case, I think Gomes would be a good fit for them on a free transfer.

“From what I hear as well, the manager likes what he’s seen from him, so it’s one that makes a lot of sense.

“He’ll know how he sees him fitting into the side, what he wants him to do and how he wants him to play.

“They’ll already be speaking to his agent and representatives about a deal because they’re not the only club interested – we’ve spoken about West Ham already.

“So they’ll want to convince him that Tottenham is the right move for his career.

Ange Postecoglou open to Bissouma exit after latest twist

Tottenham’s search for a new midfielder comes as Postecoglou has identified the position as a clear area for improvement in the summer window.

Brown told Football Insider on 15 March that Tottenham plan to accept offers for Yves Bissouma as the 28-year-old is no longer part of the manager’s plans.

This comes after Football Insider revealed earlier this month that Tottenham will hold “crunch talks” with Bissouma about his place in the squad.

He will have just 12 months remaining on his current contract at Spurs come the summer, and no talks have been held about a new deal as things stand.
