Tottenham icons who returned again amid Harry Kane’s possible comeback
Tottenham are plotting a dramatic return for former club captain Harry Kane who could return to the Premier League.
Sources told Football Insider on 26 September that Tottenham are working on a plan to bring Kane back in a sensational move.
Kane broke David Beckham’s record in the Champions League against Chelsea as he continues to shine at Bayern Munich.
Yet, a stunning comeback could be on the cards with Tottenham manager Thomas Frank open to Kane’s return.
Football Insider looks back on some of the Spurs stars who couldn’t resist coming back to north London for a second spell at their beloved club.
Teddy Sheringham – 1992-1997 and 2001-2003
Signed from Nottingham Forest in 1992, Teddy Sheringham was an explosive goalscorer with a telepathic connection to putting the ball in the back of the net.
The Englishman was an all-round gifted striker who notched 124 goals in 277 appearances in his two spells with the Lilywhites.
Sheringham left for Man United in 1997 where he won three Premier Leagues, one FA Cup and one Champions League before making a return to north London.
Unfortunately, the frontman never managed to win a trophy with Spurs, coming runners-up in the 2001-02 League Cup final.
Jurgen Klinsmann – 1994-1995 and 1997-1998
Sheringham’s partner in crime was dearly beloved by the Tottenham faithful despite spending just one-and-a-half seasons at the club.
The German scored 38 goals in 68 appearances for the Lilywhites during his career, including 29 goals in his first season alone.
Jurgen Klinsmann headed to Bayern Munich and Sampdoria before re-joining Spurs on a short-term loan for the second half of the 1997-1998 campaign.
Robbie Keane – 2002-2008 and 2009-2011
Iconised by his forward roll celebration and deft touch with the ball at his feet, Robbie Keane was a celebrated forward in north London.
The Irishman smashed in 122 goals in 306 appearances across his two spells with Spurs and formed a devastating partnership with Dimitar Berbatov.
Keane capped off his stunning first spell at Tottenham by winning the League Cup in 2007-08 before heading to Liverpool.
Only seven months later and the Ireland international returned to White Hart Lane, notching 15 more goals before he embarked on loan to Celtic and West Ham, going down as one of the greats of the club.
Jermain Defoe – 2004-2008 and 2009-2014
Also part of the triumphant League Cup side, Jermain Defoe was another tremendous striker for the Lilywhites.
The Englishman racked up 143 goals in 363 appearances and had a clinical and selfish nature in front of the net.
Defoe departed for Portsmouth in January 2008 before returning just 12 months later which saw him remain at the club until January 2014.
The former Rangers marksman’s prowess was best remembered in his five goals against Wigan in a 9-1 thrashing.
Gareth Bale – 2007-2013 and 2020-2021
Arguably one of the most exciting players to have ever graced the Premier League, Gareth Bale is the most recent Spurs man to come back to his old side.
The Welsh talisman joined Tottenham in 2007 as a 17-year-old and quickly worked his way up the ranks.
Initially a left-back, Bale’s attacking excellence and stunning pace saw him progress to a left-winger where he flourished.
Eventually heading to Real Madrid in a blockbuster move, the former Southampton academy graduate scored 71 times in 237 appearances across his two stints, grabbing 53 assists.
One of his most memorable moments was when he single-handedly destroyed Inter Milan’s Maicon in the Champions League across two legs in the 2010-11 season.
