Tottenham idol baffled after Son Heung-min footage emerges – ‘it’s bizarre’

Paul Robinson is baffled as to why Son Heung-min does not take direct free-kicks for Tottenham.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former White Hart Lane number one suggest the 30-year-old should take all set-plays for Antonio Conte’s side from now on.

As shown by the Korean Football Association (23 September), Son scored a sublime free-kick for South Korea in a 2-2 draw with Costa Rica.

It is the third direct free-kick the winger has scored for his country this calendar year.

Harry Kane and Eric Dier have taken the vast majority of Tottenham’s direct free-kicks in recent years but neither have enjoyed success in doing so.

When asked by Football Insider if the time had come for Son to take over the duty, Robinson said: “It is bizarre that he doesn’t.

“Yes, there is a lot of dead-ball specialists at Spurs but none of them are as prolific as Sonny. He has great quality.

” He takes free kicks from the wide areas but not from the central areas but I don’t know why. Given his record at international level there is no reason that he shouldn’t be.

“After his three goals last time out I would let him take a free-kick from anywhere.”

Son scored a hat-trick as a second-half substitute against Leicester City last time out (17 September).

The South Korea international has made nine appearances across all competitions this season.
