Tottenham idol issues verdict as Son Heung-min slammed by Graeme Souness – ‘it’s the last thing he wants’

Paul Robinson has leapt to the defence of Tottenham forward Son Heung-min after criticism from Graeme Souness.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former White Hart Lane number one insisted Son, 30, was not at fault for Kalidou Koulibaly’s opening goal on Sunday.

Koulibaly scored in a 2-2 draw between Chelsea and Spurs at Stamford Bridge.

Speaking on Sky Sports (14 August 17:25), ex-Liverpool and Rangers midfielder Graeme Souness pointed the finger at Son for his defending for the goal.

Souness said he would “want a word” with the Spurs winger if he was his teammate as he has “got to be more aware” when defending a corner.

When asked by Football Insider if Son needs to do better for the goal, Robinson said: “No, his tracking back is excellent.

“Defensively, Spurs got it wrong at the weekend. They marked zonally and every corner that came in there was huge space. The all got drawn into the near post for the goal. Spurs got it wrong going full zonal, marking against a team who are strong from set pieces.

“Koulibaly was clever. He sees the space. He just held back and fired it in.

“It was difficult for Son. He should not be in a position where he is defending against Koulibaly from a set play.

“The last thing Son wants it to pick up Koulibaly. I don’t blame Son as an individual for that. I just think Spurs as a team were lacking from set plays.”
