Tottenham idol ‘surprised’ by Antonio Conte after Steven Bergwijn reveal – ‘I was at the game’

Paul Robinson is “surprised” by Tottenham manager Antonio Conte’s decision not to bring on Steven Bergwijn against Brentford.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-White Hart Lane number one, who was at the game, suggested Bergwijn, 24, could have provided the much-needed “spark” for Spurs.

Tottenham lost further ground in the race for the top four after a 0-0 draw with the Bees on Saturday.

Despite his side’s lack of creativity, Conte opted against using substitute Bergwijn in the match.

When quizzed on his decision, Conte told Football.London (23 April) that he didn’t bring on the Netherlands international as he didn’t want to “risk losing the game.”

When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs for his thoughts on the call, Robinson said: “I was at the game and it did not seem to click.

“It was one of them days. There was no real excuse for it. It was just a lacklustre performance that lacked a spark. There was no cohesion.

“The front three were all looking for a way into the game. I thought the likes of Bergwijn could have made an impact from the bench so I was surprised that he didn’t come on.

“There was not a lot on the bench though. Lucas Moura and Bergwijn were the two. The options were there.”
