Tottenham idol ‘surprised’ by what he’s seen from Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg – ‘I was at the game’

Paul Robinson is “surprised” by the improvement in Tottenham midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg this season.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former White Hart Lane number one said the 27-year-old has “risen to the challenge” since Yves Bissouma’s arrival.

Hojbjerg scored in a 2-0 win over Everton on Saturday (15 October).

The centre-midfielder also produce a standout performance against Eintracht Frankfurt on Wednesday, assisting Son Heung-min’s winner.

Antonio Conte has stuck with Hojbjerg and Rodrigo Bentancur as his preferred midfielder partnership this season despite the arrival of Bissouma from Brighton.

When asked by Football Insider for his thoughts on Hojbjerg’s form, Robinson said: “I’ve been surprised by how much he has stepped up this year.

“I thought he was the one who would make way for Yves Bissouma. The club spent a lot of money on Bissouma. I think Hojbjerg recognised that and stepped up.

“He is playing to a level that we have never seen before. He is playing his best football in a Spurs shirt. He is having an amazing season.

“He brings so much offensively and defensively. [Rodrigo] Bentancur is giving him a bit more freedom. I was at the Frankfurt game and he left the pitch to a standing ovation.

“There were split opinions on him last season but there is no doubt now. He has risen to the challenge. He took the bull by the horns and said, ‘this is my shirt. You have to take it off me.’ Bissouma is having real trouble doing that.

“It has surprised me but you have to give him a lot of credit.”
