Tottenham in pole position to win Conor Gallagher race after Newcastle twist

Tottenham are well-placed to sign long-term target Conor Gallagher from Chelsea this summer despite renewed interest from Newcastle United, sources have told Football Insider.

Football Insider revealed on Monday (22 April) that Newcastle are weighing up a potential new swoop for Gallagher this summer after initial interest in 2023.

The England international rejected a move away from Chelsea at that time but is now believed to be ready to move away from Stamford Bridge this summer.

Gallagher, 24, will have just 12 months left on his contract in June and is no closer to renewing his deal following a recent halt in talks.

A well-placed source has told Football Insider that Tottenham are in a much healthier financial situation than Premier League rivals Newcastle.

The Magpies have struggled for funds in recent transfer windows with Financial Fair Play restrictions preventing them from spending big.

Sources say a deal for Gallagher could be “too hard to do” for Newcastle in the summer window with Tottenham ready to swoop.

The midfielder has made 43 appearances across all competitions for Chelsea this term, with 39 of those outings coming as part of the starting lineup.

Mauricio Pochettino, who has regularly emphasised Gallagher’s importance to his side, has given him the armband in the 2023-24 campaign despite his uncertain future.

He came through the ranks at Chelsea and has made 88 senior appearances for the club.
