Manchester United are in talks to sign Tottenham enforcer Toby Alderweireld and want to secure a deal for him by Thursday, according to a report.
The Sun claims that Man United manager Jose Mourinho wants to secure one more transfer before the World Cup stats on Thursday, with deals for midfielder Fred and defender Diogo Dalot already confirmed.
It is understood that Spurs are in talks with their Premier League rivals about selling Alderweireld and Mourinho is desperate to bring him to Old Trafford.
The report details the Belgium international is valued at around £50million and Man United are prepared to fork out that sum if the deal is structured towards them.
The 29-year-old is stalling on a new deal with Spurs over a dispute about finances and the Red Devils want to swoop in for him.
Football Insider verdict:
Alderweireld’s future certainly appears to lie away from Spurs as it stands and his exit will seem so bizarre given that Harry Kane has only just penned a new deal with the North London club. The powerhouse defender has been an integral player during Mauricio Pochettino’s era so far and is the best centre-back in the Premier League right now. His potential departure will be a significant loss to the side, while on the flip side it will seriously improve a direct rival. Man United should feel they have a great chance in the Premier League title race with Alderweireld in the heart of the defence and the ball-playing centre-back oozes class. Spurs may be forced to lose him for £50million and need to go invest that in other areas of the pitch, with a back-up striker to Kane a clear area to improve on. Pochettino may see a shinning light in the fact that Jan Vertonghen and Davinson Sanchez formed a solid partnership in defence in the 2017/18 campaign, but supporters should certainly be gutted if Alderweireld does go.
