Tottenham Insider: Daniel Levy makes ‘difficult’ Postecoglou sack decision

Ange Postecoglou is likely to stay at Tottenham next season after leading them to success in the Europa League, according to a former club scout.

Mick Brown, who also worked as the chief scout at Man United and Blackburn and remains very well-connected within the game, exclusively told Football Insider that Postecoglou will be backed in the summer to start fresh next season.

The manager is believed to have already begun planning for next season, and has put the ball firmly in Daniel Levy’s court after hinting that he could stay.

However, he will face immediate pressure on his position if results do not improve in the early stages of next season and will be sacked if things don’t change.

This comes after Football Insider revealed Postecoglou’s future at Tottenham is 50/50 in the wake of their European success after the board held fresh talks.

Daniel Levy makes Ange Postecoglou sack decision at Tottenham

Brown told Football Insider in April that Europa League success would see Tottenham grant Postecoglou a stay of execution despite the growing pressure on his position.

The former scout who has a wealth of experience working closely with elite-level managers including Sir Alex Ferguson for over a decade at Man United, insisted that the boss has made Levy’s decision “difficult” after lifting silverware.

It’s similar to what happened with Erik ten Hag at Man United,” he told Football Insider.

“He’s lifted that trophy and proved he can be successful with that squad, despite their poor form.

“So from that point of view, it’s difficult to sack him because he’s also won over a lot of the fans.

“I think Postecoglou has handled the situation well, he knows he can’t change the decision.

“But he’s put the ball in Daniel Levy‘s court, and has made a very strong case about why he should stay and where they could go.

“There are doubts, of course, that they’ll be in the same boat at the start of next season.

“If they start poorly and there doesn’t look to be any signs of improvement, they’ll have to sack him.

“But for now, I think he’s earned the right to being backed in the summer and then they can start fresh with a stronger squad and Champions League football.”

Postecoglou to be backed with Eberechi Eze deal eyed

With Postecoglou likely to remain at Spurs beyond the summer, they will look to back him to strengthen his squad in the transfer window.

Football Insider revealed on 24 May that Tottenham want to sign Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze, who has a £68million release clause in his contract at Selhurst Park.

Despite Palace’s FA Cup success and subsequent Europa League qualification, there is still a belief that the England international could be allowed to leave.

This comes after Football Insider revealed on 14 May that Spurs are opening preliminary talks about signing Eze, but want to pay a fee below the release clause.
