Report: Tottenham jet out on scouting mission to watch European clash, 20-year-old international of interest

By Harvey Byrne

Tottenham sent scouts to watch Cologne play Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga, according to a report.

The Daily Mail has named Spurs alongside Premier League rivals Chelsea, Arsenal, Everton and Manchester United as having representatives at the match.

It is stated that Hakan Calhanoglu was under scrutiny, while 20-year-old Germany international Julian Brandt was also of interest.

The match was played on December 21 and finished 1-1 with goals from  Anthony Modeste and Brazilian Wendell.

Both Calhanoglu and Brandt played the full 90 minutes for Leverkusen, giving onlookers plenty to watch over.

Brandt featured both times for Leverkusen against Spurs earlier in the campaign and clearly impressed.

The young star made a five-minute substitute appearance in the first group game before featuring for 70 minutes in the return leg at Wembley.

Brandt is considered one of the brightest prospects in Europe with four appearances to his name already for Germany at his early age.

He was also part of the German Olympics team in the summer, playing a vital role in helping his side to the silver medal.

The young starlet has six assists to his name with three goals in 22 appearances in all competitions and would provide a good addition to a Spurs attack currently struggling for goals and for the future.

Football Insider verdict:

Brandt would be a phenomenal signing for Spurs in January. A player does not get capped four times by world champions Germany at just 20 if they are not thought of as a bright star for the future. Taking into consideration that Germany are also very strong in the attack only adds to what Brandt has achieved at his early age. There is no doubt that the young star will be attracting clubs from all over the world, but Spurs could bag themselves a real gem if they are able to obtain the Bayer Leverkusen starlet.
