Tottenham are keen on 20-year-old centre-back who could cost at least £13.5m – report

Tottenham are keen to sign Dinamo Zagreb centre-back Filip Benkovic this summer, according to a report.

The Mirror have detailed on their live transfer blog (Sunday) that the 20-year-old defender is attracting interest from Spurs as well as Italian giants Inter Milan, who are said to have display a “tentative interest.”

But, Zagreb are also keen to keep hold of the young Croatia Under-21 international and it is said that Benkovic could cost at least £13.5million.

Tottenham could also be handed a boost if they do push forward with a move as the Mirror report also claims that a move to the Premier League and a club involved in the Champions League appeals to the youngster and Spurs fit in to both of those categories.

Benkovic himself is still contracted to Zagreb until 2022 and he has made 48 appearances in total for the Croatian giants so far in his short professional career.

Football Insider verdict:

Tottenham have a habit of buying young talents from across Europe and while Spurs meet the criteria that Benkovic is looking for he certainly meets the ethos that the club have. Additionally, a young centre-back may be the best option for the club with neither of Toby Alderweireld or Jan Vertonghen looking to give up their places in the team any time soon. Therefore, someone like Benkovic, who can be blooded into the Spurs first team over time with the hope of eventually replacing the Belgian duo could be the perfect signing for Mauricio Pochettino’s side in this summer’s transfer window.
