Tottenham make Son Heung-min decision – ‘Look, I want to leave now, I’m ready to go’

Son Heung-min will hold talks about his Tottenham future amid speculation linking him with moves either to the MLS or the Saudi Pro League.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, former Spurs goalkeeper Paul Robinson explained that discussions are set to take place behind the scenes about the forward’s future and their plans for the window.

While there is a feeling he may now be past his peak, there is recognition of the value he brings not just as an important member of the squad, but also commercially.

Football Insider revealed on 10 June that Tottenham could cash in on Son should a “huge” offer arrive although they would be reluctant to see him leave.

With just one year remaining on his current contract, the South Korea international has been heavily backed to remain at Spurs before leaving for free next year.

Robinson previously told Football Insider that Son can still be key for Tottenham despite a frustrating season and urged the club to reject any offers.

Tottenham to make Son Heung-min exit decision

Former Spurs scout Mick Brown told Football Insider on 14 July that Tottenham are prepared to let Son leave amid concerns about his fitness and longevity.

No decision is believed to have been made yet, with his future still up in the air, but a plan will be determined before the end of the window.

Robinson explained that both parties will reach an agreement behind the scenes depending on whether they both see his immediate future being at Spurs.

With Tottenham in the Champions League, they’re going to need a squad,” he told Football Insider.

“You look at his stats last year, they were nowhere near as good as they were the year before, but you know what type of player you’re getting.

“With just one year left on his contract, there’s more value in keeping him for a Champions League and Premier League campaign rather than selling him now.

“You don’t really want to lose that type of player and what Sonny can offer you.

“It’s a situation where, if he goes to the club and says ‘Look, I want to leave now, I’m ready to go, it’s been fantastic, the time is now’, the club go ‘Okay, brilliant, let’s maximise the deal and get as much as we can for you now’.

“At the same time, if the club have spoken to him and say ‘Look, you’re staying for another year’ and everyone’s agreed, in my opinion that’s the best solution.

“He’s an incredible commercial entity, as well as a world-class player.

“So to have him for another year at Tottenham, you know, it would be excellent.”

Thomas Frank to lead major Spurs overhaul

Speculation about Son’s future comes amid a busy transfer window at Tottenham, with a number of big incoming and outgoing deals expected to take place.

Brown told Football Insider on 19 July that Thomas Frank is planning to overhaul his squad and will be backed heavily by Daniel Levy to put plans in place.

The newly-appointed manager is believed to have the full backing of the owners and directors at Spurs amid acknowledgement that wide-scale changes are needed.

As a result, Tottenham are prepared to back Frank in the transfer market and have already shown their willingness to spend big on the squad.
