‘Tottenham make Marc Guehi decision as Spurs sign bargain alternative’

Tottenham have seemingly opted against signing Marc Guehi after securing a bargain deal in the transfer market.

Thomas Frank must bolster his defence after Spurs conceded a whopping 65 goals in the Premier League last season.

With that in mind, Tottenham have been interested in Guehi alongside the likes of defending top-flight champions Liverpool.

The England international has shown his class for Crystal Palace, and played a key role as the Eagles won the FA Cup last month.

Tottenham may not sign Guehi after sealing move for Japan international

Guehi would undoubtedly be a good addition for Spurs if Frank’s men landed an agreement for the Crystal Palace man.

However, according to Football London [23 June], Tottenham have sealed a £5million deal for 20-year-old Japan international centre-back Kota Takai.

Takai has made 78 appearances for Japanese outfit Kawasaki Frontale, who currently sit eighth in the J League after 20 games.

As per Football London’s report, the 20-year-old is expected to be a first-team player for Tottenham this season, which could scupper any potential advances for Guehi.

Takai could work effectively with Frank

There is a notable gulf in class between the J League and the Premier League, which could initially prove difficult for Takai to bridge once he agrees terms with the North Londoners.

However, the 20-year-old has made four senior appearances for Japan, which demonstrates both his potential and his current credentials.

Furthermore, Frank’s work at Brentford has seen the Bees transition from a Championship club to a solid Premier League outfit, showing that he is the ideal man to help Takai acclimatise to the English top flight.

As per FotMob, Takai has won 75.8 per cent of his tackles in the J League in 2025, while also showcasing his tenacity by winning 86 duels in 19 appearances.

The 20-year-old also boasts quality on the ball with an impressive pass accuracy of 88.3 per cent, showing that he has the potential to shine under Frank if he adjusts well to the Premier League.

Meanwhile, Sunderland have been tipped to sell Dennis Cirkin to Spurs for £20m in a Tottenham News exclusive.
