Why Tottenham must launch raid for Man United 21-year-old after Mourinho criticism (not Shaw)
COMMENT By Danny Wright
Jose Mourinho has not been afraid to criticise his Manchester United players in his first season at Old Trafford.
Luke Shaw was the first in the ex-Chelsea boss’ firing line, but now he has set his sights on Anthony Martial, who has only scored one Premier League goal in 2017.
The Daily Mirror had previously reported that Tottenham were looking to sign the French attacker in February and Mourinho’s latest comments mean that now is the time for Spurs to strike.
The 54-year-old suggested that Martial must begin offering the goods at Old Trafford and that he has to start adapting to his managing techniques.
“Do I think Anthony is a player with great potential? Yes. Do I think he can play successfully for me? Yes. But he needs to give me things that I like,” said Mourinho, as quoted by the Daily Mail.

“We are together for almost 10 months or something like that. The same way I know the players much better now, the players should also know me much better now.
“The same way I know what the players like, I think the players also know what I like. The same way I have to go with the direction of the players, the players have to come in my direction.”
Mauricio Pochettino has been said to be in the market for at least one new attacker this summer.
Vincent Janssen’s switch to North London last year has not gone well and, aside from Harry Kane and Son Heung-Min, the club lacks a player that can provide strength in-depth up front.
Spurs should take Mourinho’s latest critique as an open door to launch their move for the highly talented 21-year-old.
He showed what he could do in his debut season at the club when he smashed 17 goals and 10 assists after signing from Monaco in 2015.
Things haven’t been so peachy since Louis Van Gaal exited the club.
Martial has scored seven goals this term in all competitions and has only started 12 league matches since Mourinho and Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s arrival in Manchester last summer.
However, if anyone can get the most from the mercurial French international, it’s Pochettino.
He fits perfectly into his footballing ethos, bringing flair, youth and hopefully a hatful of goals to North London.
A summer swoop for Martial would also severely weaken one of their league rivals – a cherry on the cake.
