While Tottenham have been picking up the plaudits for their successes over the last few seasons, not everyone is satisfied with the direction that they are going in.
The Lilywhites have gone from being on the fringes of European qualification to top four regulars, while their performances on the continent have picked up as the season’s have gone by.
Their mix of young talent and experienced heads has had them playing some excellent football under Mauricio Pochettino and many believe that all that is missing in the silverware to finally validate their achievements.
However, one man who does not look likely to pick up any trophies with Spurs is Toby Alderweireld, the Belgian having been embroiled in a contractual dispute for much of the campaign.
With convoluted terms in his current deal which could see him leave for a cut-price in 12 months, it seems likely he will be leaving, with Daniel Levy seemingly unwilling to match the international powerhouse’s demands.
That has left the door open for rivals to pounce, and the London Evening Standard claim that Manchester United are feeling confident on securing his services for a £40million fee this summer.
If Jose Mourinho is closing in for Alderweireld, then Pochettino must be planning to get the very best out of his exit – and a sensational swap deal for Anthony Martial is the perfect counterweight for Spurs to swoop for.
Out of favour at Old Trafford, the versatile forward made just 18 league starts in the season just gone and, with 11 goals across all competitions, was left cutting a frustrated figure under Mourinho – but despite that, there seems to be no clear decision on his future, making a possible swoop an ambitious one for Spurs.
A change of scenery seems necessary for the 22-year-old to live up to expectation and Spurs, with their vast array of young stars, could be perfect for the Frenchman.
The possibility of playing as Harry Kane’s backup at centre forward, or battling it out with Heung-min Son at left wing, is a daunting prospect, but Martial has proven he has the talents to mix it with the best, and it would soften the blow for Spurs if Alderweireld does head to the north west.
