Tottenham must strengthen in this area to win the Premier League

COMMENT By Dominic Toner

Tottenham should prioritise signing a new striker in the January transfer window if they are to challenge for the Premier League title.

Spurs are currently fifth-placed in the league table and are seven points adrift of leaders Chelsea.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side are in a great position to mount a title challenge in a close-fought competition, but need some extra firepower in attack.

The north London club have only lost one of their 14 Premier League games this season, but have drawn six of them and that is halting their title ambitions.

They have scored significantly less goals than the top four teams and could be right in the mix if they were more consistent in front of goal.

Spurs proved against Swansea that they do have quality with a convincing 5-0 victory, but that was only the fifth time they have scored more than one goal in a league game this season.

The Premier League’s leading sides have been in immaculate form in front of goal and Spurs have been too reliant on Harry Kane.

Vincent Janssen is Spurs’ only other senior striker and he is yet to score from open play for the club, while versatile attacker Heung-Min Son is best suited to a wide position.

Janssen, 22, has been a real disappointment and was expected to provide competition for Kane, but instead is make a slow adjustment to English football.

Spurs struggled without Kane during his 10-game absence through injury this campaign and would surely fall away if he was sidelined again.

Pochettino’s side are also set to have the extra games of the Europa League if they avoid defeat against CSKA Moscow on Tuesday, which could leave the manger’s options very thin.

In other Tottenham news, the club must keep hold of these three players in January.
