The agent of Turkish midfield prodigy Serkan Bakan has named Tottenham as one of the sides in pursuit of his client.
The 16-year-old burst onto the scene last season after he broke the record for the youngest goalscorer in the Turkish Super Lig, hitting home for Gaziantepspor against Antalyaspor in a 4-1 defeat.
A natural attacking midfielder, he has an average of a goal every two games, with two strikes in four appearances for the senior side.
A Turkey Under-16 international, his rise has drawn the interest of some of the top clubs across Europe, according to his agent, with Spurs facing a fight from a fellow Premier League giant.
Ibrahim Polat told ESPN FC: “Manchester United and Tottenham have been scouting Bakan.
“Several clubs from Germany have also been keeping tabs.
“Serkan is a special talent, so it is natural for there to be a lot of interest.”
Potential suitors may be hoping to capitalise on Gaziantepspor’s relegation from the top tier of Turkish football, although the club are hoping to convince him to stay with the promise of a place in the first team.
Football Insider verdict
Securing the top young talent is always a priority for clubs but it can be difficult to adjudge their potential at such a young age. However, Bakan seems like he could have a bright future, having been introduced to first team football at such a young age. If he were to join the likes of Manchester United or Tottenham, the chances are he will be made to wait for a senior opportunity, although he could look at Dele Alli for inspiration. If he is to be guaranteed first team action, then maybe Spurs could swoop in, secure a transfer and immediately loan him back out to Gaziantepspor. That way, the player is in familiar surroundings, playing senior level football, while Tottenham have secured the future of a promising starlet.
In other Tottenham transfer news, this man has been given another chance by Mauricio Pochettino despite his poor form.
