Tottenham news: Eric Dier has ‘played last game’ after Saturday development – pundit
Tottenham defender Eric Dier has likely played his last game for England, according to Kevin Phillips.
The ex-Premier League striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, is adamant Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate will prioritise younger players over the 28-year-old in future squads.
England confirmed their squad for friendlies against Switzerland and Cote d’Ivoire on 17 March from which Dier was absent.
Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi was preferred by Southgate with the 21-year-old handed his debut against Switzerland on Saturday.
Tottenham manager Antonio Conte has heaped praise on Dier since his appointment in November and the centre-half has repaid the faith with impressive displays.
When asked if the curtain has been drawn on Dier’s England career, Phillips Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs: “I think he’s probably played his last game for England.
“It will be difficult for him to get back into the squad even though he’s playing well for Tottenham.
“Gareth likes to bring the youth through and the kid from Palace is an exciting young player. He has had a really good season and deserves his call-up.

“Dier has a lot of England caps to his name. You can never say never but it’s looking very unlikely. I think Southgate will go down a different route.
“All Dier can do is play well for his club and hope that he gets back into the squad at some point. I’m pretty sure Southgate will be looking elsewhere though.”
