Tottenham news: Expert issues '£60m+' transfer 'catastrophe' claim after Hugo Lloris update

Tottenham have saved “£60million-plus” after handing Hugo Lloris a new contract earlier this year, according to Noel Whelan.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed tying the 35-year-old down is the “best signing Spurs have made” this term.

Lloris made eight saves as Tottenham won 4-0 away at Aston Villa on Saturday (9 April), seven of which came during a frantic first half (as per SofaScore).

The 137-cap France international signed a fresh contract extension in January as his previous deal entered its final six months.

The Tottenham skipper will remain at the club until June 2024.

Whelan insisted Antonio Conte’s side would have had to spend at least £60million to replace Lloris.

“He’s massive for Spurs,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“That’s why they gave him a new contract.

“He could have walked away at the end of the season, and that would have been a catastrophe. How do you replace him?

“There are not many goalkeepers out there like him, so that was a vital piece of business to get him tied down – probably the best signing they’ve made this season.

“To get someone as good as him in this market, you’d have to pay at least £60million.

“Just look at the saves he made. Villa were so aggressive, and when he looks back at that first half – he’ll be thinking that is one of the best performances he’s had in a Spurs shirt.”

As per FBRef, Lloris has registered the 11th-best save percentage of any goalkeeper in the Premier League this term (70.3%).

Tottenham sit fourth in the Premier League after winning six of their last seven top-flight games.
