Tottenham are close to completing the signing of Paulo Gazzaniga from Southampton, according to a report.
Sky Sports claims on their website that that Gazzaniga, 25, is poised to re-unite with former Saints boss Mauricio Pochettino in north London as Spurs look to snap up a third choice goalkeeper.
It is understood that Tottenham considered a permanent deal for Pau Lopez, who spent last season with the Premier League runners-up on loan from Espanyol, but has since opted for the Saints man.
The report suggests that Gazzaniga is now on the verge of becoming Spurs’ second signing of the summer after Davison Sanchez was confirmed by the club to have all but completed his move to north London from Ajax after agreeing a six-year deal.
Gazzaniga spent last season on loan in the Spanish second tier with Sedunda Division side Rayo Vallecano where he kept 12 clean sheets in 34 appearances across all competitions.
In his time at Southampton, the Argentinean goalkeeper played 23 times in the senior squad as an understudy to England international Fraser Forster.
Football Insider Verdict
It makes sense to have a third choice goalkeeper, but Spurs fans had better hope that Pochettino isn’t spending an unnecessary amount of money on getting Gazzaniga in. It could be seen as a waste of time when one of the Under-23 squad members might be able to make the step up to the first-team should there be a rotten bit of luck for Tottenham. Spurs need to still do some big work before the transfer window slams shut. Although its good to be padding out their squad, they need to do it in the attacking areas as well.
