‘Tottenham open Rodrigo Bentancur talks as Atletico Madrid lead European buyers’
Tottenham are already taking action over the future of Rodrigo Bentancur as interest ramps up from elsewhere in the midfielder.
The Uruguay international joined Spurs back in the 2022 January transfer window and his since made over 100 appearances in all competitions for the club.
This summer will see 27-year-old enter the final year of his contract in North London, so his side will be under pressure to retain his services.
But as other clubs start to take an interest in the midfielder, Tottenham are taking action in an attempt to keep one of their key men.

Rodrigo Bentancur in new contract talks
In the lead up to this summer, Atletico Madrid have already been linked with a move for Tottenham centre-back Cristian Romero.
However the Argentine is seemingly not the only Spurs player the La Liga club are keen to sign when the market reopens at the end of the season.
According to a report from the Times, Tottenham now face a “fight” to keep Bentancur in the summer transfer window.
Rodrigo Bentancur 2024/25 Premier League stats | Total (from SofaScore) |
Appearances | 23 |
Goals | 2 |
Assists | 0 |
Pass Success Rate | 88% |

With his deal running down, the Premier League side are now said to have opened talks with the midfielder’s representatives about securing a contract extension, as they want to keep him in their squad.
But if they are unable to agree a deal, then Atletico Madrid are apparently at the head of a number of European clubs who could look to take advantage if the 27-year-old does not sign a new deal with Spurs.

Tottenham need Europa League win
Football Insider Verdict
It is expected that winning the Europa League title will not be enough to save Ange Postecoglou from the sack at Tottenham come the end of the season.
Even so, situations such as this highlight how important it still is for the club to win that competition in the coming weeks.
Bentancur is now established as one of the first-choice central midfielders in Postecoglou‘s side so losing his influence would be a blow as they look to recover from such a disappointing season.
Victory in the Europa League this season would earn Tottenham qualification to the Champions League for next season.
If that happens, they will be in a much stronger position to offer Bentancur a new deal, from both a footballing and financial perspective.
Should they fail to achieve that success though, clubs such as Atletico will be able to offer the midfielder those opportunities, leaving Spurs in a difficult position over one of their key players.
