Tottenham plot to accelerate contract talks with international, wages to be doubled – Times
By Danny Wright
Tottenham are poised to hand Harry Winks a new contract which will see his wages in North London double, according to a report.
The Times claims that Winks, 21, will be handed a deal worth £40,000-a-week after he earned his debut international cap for England in the 1-0 win against Lithuania on Sunday.
It is understood that Spurs are plotting to accelerate talks with the midfielder and even prioritise a new deal for him ahead of Dele Alli and Toby Alderweireld, as the club are under the impression that it will be easier to negotiate.
Winks only signed his latest £20,000-a-week deal with Tottenham in February, however it is reported that wage rises are offered out when players reach landmarks are begin to establish themselves in the first-team.
The England international has started the last two matches for Spurs, in wins against Huddersfield and APOEL Nicosia, and it seems that after his impressive display for the Three Lions, he can only earn more game time under Mauricio Pochettino in the future.
Football Insider Verdict
Winks has a great future ahead of him and this new deal shows that Tottenham share that thought. He has to start playing more regularly in the first-team though, and it seems like he may be able to force the likes of Moussa Sissoko and Mousa Dembele on to the bench if he keeps up his current run of form. Dembele and Victor Wanyama returning from injury will no doubt see Winks drop back down the pecking order, meaning he needs to make the most of his current chance in the side. Based on the last few games, he has seized the opportunity, earning himself an England cap and a new contract.
