Tottenham renegotiating Mathys Tel deal amid unexpected twist

Tottenham are preparing to return to the negotiating table with Bayern Munich in a bid to agree a cut-price permanent deal for Mathys Tel, sources have told Football Insider.

In an unexpected twist, sources say there is a willingness at Spurs to sign Tel, 20, despite his mixed loan with the club in the second half of the 2024-25 campaign.

Tottenham confirmed Timo Werner would be returning to RB Leipzig and Kevin Danso would be joining permanently from Lens after the expiry of their loans – but made no mention of Tel.

Spurs’ transfer plans are currently up in the air but club chiefs will seek a sign-off from whoever ends up in the dugout as they look to pursue a new deal for the Frenchman.

Tottenham will not pay £45m for Tel

Spurs’ budget and capacity to strike a deal has been subject to a double boost in recent weeks following the scrapping of a permanent Werner deal and qualification to the Champions League for next term.

However, the Lilywhites will not pay the £45million buy option they agreed with Bayern Munich earlier this year.

Tel hit three goals and notched one assist in 20 appearances across all competitions for Tottenham during his loan.

The France Under-21 international has already racked up more than 100 games in senior football despite being just 20.

He is under contract at Bayern until June 2029 but is not believed to be a key part of Vincent Kompany’s plans in Bavaria.

Frank to Tottenham update – new fears emerge

Meanwhile, Football Insider has revealed (2 June) that Thomas Frank is interested in the Tottenham job after initial talks were held in recent days.

Sources say Frank fears Brentford will be forced to sell their best players yet again this summer and would be tempted by the chance to manage at a ‘big-six’ club and in the Champions League.

Ange Postecoglou could be relieved of his duties just weeks after winning the Europa League final against Man United.
