Kieran Maguire salutes Tottenham after ‘iconic’ source reveal – ‘it’s what they’ve always wanted’

Tottenham know that their stadium can secure “iconic” status by hosting an event as prestigious as the Champions League final.

That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the latest news from behind the scenes in North London.

A source told this site on Tuesday (13 December) that Spurs want to host the Champions League final after 2026.

Daniel Levy sees staging the showpiece event as the ultimate prize but knows that it could be some time before they are able to do so given that Wembley Stadium is hosting in 2024.

The chairman and co-owner also believes that their interest in striking a deal with UEFA will strengthen their hand when it comes to negotiating a stadium naming rights partnership.

Maguire assessed the merits of Spurs plan from both a financial and reputation-enhancing point of view.

“Spurs have always wanted the new stadium to be a multi-purpose, multi-function venue,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

“Therefore, hosting something as prestigious would not only be beneficial from a financial point of view but increase the status as an iconic place to go as well.

“They would get a hosting fee and also significant cash from catering, merchandising and other income.

“Therefore, they will be frustrated if Wembley does host the Champions League in 2024 as that likely would prove a barrier to the event returning to London.

These days, it is very much seen as a rival to the new Spurs stadium.”
