Tottenham ‘saviour arrives right on time for Cristian Romero exit danger’

Ben Davies has given Tottenham a welcome lift in recent weeks given the latest reports surrounding Cristian Romero.

The Wales international has been forced into the starting XI in recent weeks alongside Radu Dragusin after injuries to the Argentine and Mickey van de Ven, who had previously been well-established as the first-choice central defensive pairing for Ange Postecoglou’s side.

Given the latest updates that have now emerged around his Tottenham teammate, it could well be argued that Davies’ own fortunes recently will be a big relief for his club.

Since coming back into the side, the Welshman has produced some impressive performances for Spurs.

Perhaps the best example of that came in the stunning 4-0 thrashing of reigning Premier League champions Man City, in which Davies helped to shut down their attacking threat brilliantly.

It has also now been reported recently that Tottenham are set to trigger an extension in the 31-year-old’s contract to keep him in North London beyond the end of this season (The Athletic).

By contrast, according to talkSPORT, the club are at risk of losing Romero at the end of this season if they do not qualify for the Champions League.

Tottenham defender Ben Davies has been impressive in emergency duty in the middle.

The Argentine is apparently keen to play against the top clubs in Europe, amid interest from Real Madrid.

It could be tough for Spurs to earn qualification for the Europe’s top club competition, given the strength of others in the top-flight in England, and their own inconsistent form so far this season.

Since that may make it hard for them to keep Romero, the situation around Davies may have come at the perfect time for Tottenham.

Not only does extending his contract ensure they can maintain some depth at centre-back, but his form recently, suggests they will be doing so with a solid option they can still rely on at this level to ensure there is emergency help if a top man leaves.

All of that means that amid the concern around this latest Romero news Spurs may at least be able to take some solace from how things have gone for Davies recently.
