Tottenham must break Chelsea hearts and pounce for reported £30m Newcastle powerhouse
COMMENT
With the news that Chelsea are reportedly eyeing a £30million swoop for Jamaal Lascelles, there is no reason why Tottenham should not be in pursuit of the Newcastle powerhouse.
It is looking increasingly likely that contract-rebel Toby Alderweireld will leave the North Londoners this summer, as they will not want to risk losing him for free next year.
The Belgian international was left-out of Mauricio Pochettino’s starting XI to face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, despite publicly declaring his fitness and availability weeks ago.
And that will leave an opening in the side for a fresh face.
Yes, Davison Sanchez has stood in admirably throughout Alderweireld’s injury problems and formed a formidable partnership in the heart of defence alongside Jan Vertonghen but they will need more experience at the back for their European and domestic pursuits next season.

Under Rafael Benitez, Lascelles has risen to the challenge this season and become an integral member of the side as captain, key to the club’s revival of late.
The Magpies are up to 12th in the table on 35 points, now seven points clear of the bottom three after the victory against Huddersfield on Saturday.
At 24, Lascelles has age on his side and the experience he has gathered in the high-intense pressure of a relegation battle would put him in good stead for dealing with the expectations at the top end of the table.
Chelsea might want the Newcastle man, but Spurs must be breaking the Blues’ hearts this summer.
