Medical expert names Bergwijn return date after Tottenham update

Steven Bergwijn could return to action for Tottenham in the North London derby next Tuesday week (18 January).

That is the view of injury expert Ben Dinnery, who runs the Premier Injuries site and has a background in medicine and data analysis.

Bergwijn, who is suffering with a calf injury, has been unavailable to Spurs boss Antonio Conte since the 3-0 Boxing Day win over Crystal Palace.

As quoted by football.london yesterday (7 January), Conte revealed he expects the 24-year-old Dutchman to be back “very soon”.

Tomorrow’s FA Cup clash against Morecambe and League Cup semi-final second leg versus Chelsea next Wednesday (12 January) may come too soon.

But the forward could make his comeback against the Gunners in game week 22 in the Premier League, predicts Dinnery.

“From the game, we didn’t realise at the time that there was a problem,” he told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.

“It was only afterwards when Conte spoke that we realised the injury, so hopefully that’s an indication it isn’t too serious or sinister.

“In terms of fitness and sharpness, I don’t think there is a need to rush him back for the FA Cup.

“He has been getting minutes under his belt recently and he has looked fairly sharp.

“You can maybe delay his return, err on the side of caution and then bring him back against Arsenal. That is very realistic.

“That will have given him two or three weeks to recover, which should be fine.”

Bergwijn’s 13 appearances across all competitions this season have yielded one goal and two assists.

His return to fitness is even more pressing given the recent news of Son Heung-min’s unspecified leg injury.
