Finance guru: Tottenham ‘taking massive strides’ as £162m bonanza revealed

Tottenham are still not commercially level with their Premier League rivals but their latest 2021/22 projection shows “massive” commercial growth.

That is the opinion of finance expert Doctor Dan Plumley, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Spurs’ projected commercial figures.

Sources told Football Insider last Friday (23 December) that Spurs are set to announce a club-record commercial income for the 2021/22 season.

Tottenham are expected to surpass the £161.5million they received last season from sponsorship and merchandise sales, putting them among the Premier League’s best-performing commercial sides.

It marks the second time in as many seasons that Tottenham’s commercial income exceeds their broadcast payments.

Only Man United and Man City are expected to join Spurs in trousering more from commercial income than they did from media rights.

Plumley believes the latest commercial projections are a sign of the stadium strategy working for Tottenham but believes further improvement can come through on-pitch success.

“It’s a success in relation to the commercial revenue because that has increased significantly over time with Spurs, and that was part of the strategy and that links to the stadium,” Plumley told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

“It’s an area where all clubs were targeting growth and Spurs had some work to do to catch up to other bigger clubs a few years back.

“They’re not on the scale of a Man United or Man City yet but they are making massive commercial strides so you’d have to say that’s a success in terms of where they’ve been to where they are now.

“But the flip side is that to extract the most value out of those commercial deals you have to be performing at the top of the table week-in week-out and if you’re in the Champions League that then has a knock-on effect in terms of commercial revenue and in turn broadcast revenue.

“They go hand-in-hand and affect each other so while the commercial revenue is good now, the way to improve that is through on-pitch performances – constantly qualifying for the Champions League and challenging for the Premier League title.

“It’s good progress, but they can do more if on-pitch progress continues.”
